China imposed 100% tariffs on canola oil and meal in March 2025 following an anti-discrimination investigation triggered by Canada’s tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. In August 2025, a preliminary anti-dumping decision added a 75.8% tariff on canola seed. A final decision in the anti-dumping case must be made by March 2026.
Following the Government of Canada announcement in September 2025 of a relief package to Canadian workers and businesses that focused on lending, the canola sector responded that lending is a short term solution that will not help farmers with the full effect of these trade disruptions. In a joint meeting with the federal agriculture minister, MCGA raised farmers’ need for hope that this was not the extent of government support. Minister MacDonald reframed the announcement as a first step.
Manitoba Canola Growers Association (MCGA), alongside the Canola Council of Canada (CCC), Canadian Canola Growers Association (CCGA), Keystone Agricultural Producers (KAP), and the provincial government, continue intense advocating for stable and open canola markets. The canola sector is also assessing financial damages from falling prices and reduced exports.
MCGA supports CCGA as the lead participant in the anti-dumping investigation and CCC’s efforts to restore market access and secure government support for affected farmers. Confidential updates are shared with the board, and public updates will follow as appropriate.
