Manitoba Canola Growers Association (MCGA) have long been clear about the need for better, more timely market information. Back in 2021, MCGA members passed a resolution calling for the creation of an Export Sales Reporting Program that would require large sales of canola seed, oil and meal to be reported daily, compiled weekly, and shared in a timely way. The goal was simple: give farmers better insight to support smarter marketing decisions.
That need hasn’t changed.
Export sales reporting is already standard practice in other major exporting countries, like the United States, where regular, transparent reporting helps reduce uncertainty and provides producers with a clearer picture of demand. Bringing a similar system to Canada would strengthen market transparency, improve price discovery, and ultimately help level the playing field for Canadian growers.
Today, we’re seeing meaningful progress on this file through a national campaign being led by SaskOilseeds, in collaboration with partners across the industry. MCGA is proud to support this work, which directly aligns with the direction our members set several years ago.
This issue was raised as a priority for farmers across the Prairies and nationally, making it well-suited to a coordinated approach. Canadian Canola Growers Association (CCGA) initiated lobbying at the federal level, and recently SaskOilseeds committed their capacity and resources to continue advancing this work. The collaborative approach enables partner organizations like MCGA to align behind a single, farmer-focused effort. Working together enables us to use collective resources more efficiently, reduce duplication, and advance a clear, unified voice with federal decision-makers.
For Manitoba farmers, the outcome we’re working toward is clear: improved access to timely, reliable export sales data that can help inform marketing decisions and reduce uncertainty in a complex global marketplace. Whether it’s understanding demand trends, anticipating market shifts, or making more confident sales decisions, better information leads to better outcomes on the farm.
MCGA will continue to support this effort and ensure Manitoba farmers’ perspectives are represented as the work moves forward. By working alongside our provincial partners and industry stakeholders, we can help advance a system that benefits the entire sector.
